Techniques:

What techniques does the author use to develop setting, characters, plot?

  1. To develop Mack, the author uses direct and indirect characterization. He is physically described directly, but we learn about his personality through his dialogue and actions. The other chracters, like Nan and thier kids are developed by the author directly describing them. The setting is described directly as Mack and his job is described. The plot is developed a little slower, after Mack's current life is known and we are told of Missy's kidnapping.

  2. Some techniques he used were third person for the narrator. He used a moderate amount of figurative language. The mood is very sad. Mack is a dynamic and round character. There is flashbacks in the beginning when referring to Missy's kidnapping and death.
